I love the Christmas season, the music, the decorations, visiting with friends and family. But what is the correct way to express your feelings to others during this holiday season with so many different religions and so many different beliefs?
I got to thinking about this very situation this morning and decided to share with you my personal take on the subject.
I have several options. I can say “Merry Christmas” to my friends who celebrate Christmas. I can say “Happy Holidays” to my friends who celebrate other things this time of year. Or I can say “Seasons Greetings” to my friends who don’t necessarily celebrate anything special this time of year.
I am not one to try to be “politically correct” whatever that means. Yet I also am not a person who wants to offend others.
So when I say, “I wish you a very Merry Christmas”, this is what I am saying:
Christmas is about more than just the celebration of a new baby coming into the world. It is about what that means to us today. It is about loving your neighbor and spreading good will to everyone throughout the world. That is something that is not restricted to just those in the world that are Christian.
Our world has gotten much smaller these past 2012 years and our neighbor can be people on the other side of the earth.
We are living in perhaps the most interesting times since the beginning of time. The year 2012 may be the end of life as we know it or it may be the new beginning.
It all depends on how we respond to what takes place. It depends on what we decide to do to make a positive difference in the lives of our neighbors.
In a week a new year will begin. It is a year that has been written about and talked about more than any other year in history.
The world, our world, is going through some major changes. What has worked in the past may no longer work in the future. We must take our focus away from ourselves and ask “How can I help improve the lives of my neighbors?”
Many people say ”What can I do, I am only one person?” Yet look at history. 2012 years ago one person did make a difference and if you look further into history you will discover that many times one person did make a difference.
Actually, I think those single individuals were just the catalyst, that it took many people working in collaboration with those individuals to really make the difference.
So if someone wishes you a Merry Christmas and you are not a Christian, do not take offense. They are just saying to you, “I care about you and want the very best for you.”
Merry Christmas
